Top Three Reasons For Wrapping Your Food in Beeswax

Last month, I went to the Green Living Show and I bought these Beeswax Food Wraps from a Montreal based company called B Factory. All I can say is, I’m in love! So much so, that I created this list of the top 3 reasons why everyone should be wrapping their food in beeswax!

  1. Using Beeswax to wrap your food will save you $$

With the proper care, you can use these beeswax food wraps over and over again for a year. Plastic cling wrap is only good for MAYBE one or two uses, whereas with the beeswax, you can wrap and unwrap the same bowl of salsa over and over again. Because the beeswax food wraps are an all natural product, the food wraps are breathable. This reduces the amount of condensation in your food containers and on the food itself. This basically means that all your food products will last longer! Reducing not only food waste, but wasted money, and wasted plastic and foil. Beeswax is also naturally antibacterial and anti-fungal! This again will help to preserve the life of your produce and other food products! Beeswax is also waterproof! Long story short, you can continuously re-use this product safely, and it will keep your food fresh longer, which will save you money in the long run. You can even make your own beeswax food wraps if you really want to save some coin, but honestly there are several online Canadian companies where you can purchase your food wraps already made! Like B Factory, or Abeego Canada.

2. Beeswax food wraps are safe for you and for the environment

As I mentioned before, unlike plastic wrap and foil, beeswax is antibacterial and anti-fungal. This will protect your food, and therefore your health. Also, beeswax itself will never go bad. Some commercial or household beeswax products may contain other ingredients that may cause the beeswax to expire, however, beeswax itself never goes bad. How is that? Well, beeswax contains this powerful protective substance called propolis, that shields beeswax from ever going bad. The bees make propolis by combining tree resin with wax flakes and pollen. Propolis is used to fix and strengthen the beehive while protecting the hive at the same time. In addition, beeswax is natural and non-toxic, so it does not contain any of the harmful chemical properties of plastic and aluminum. This makes it is completely safe to keep close to your food. Beeswax is breathable, and waterproof. It will keep moisture from coming into your food, while keeping the natural moisture of your food in. It is reusable. All you have to do is wash it with cold water and light soap. After a year, or when the beeswax no longer sticks, you can cut it up and compost it. Saving a whole bunch of tin foil and plastic wrap from going into the landfill.

3. Beeswax Food Wraps are light and the take up less room than containers

If you’re someone like me who likes to pack a lunch but also travels a lot, beeswax food wraps are the way to go. They are light, waterproof, and easily mold to your food. This will help cut down the weight in your lunch bag, but it will also leave more space for you to pack more food! You can wrap almost anything in beeswax. The only things I would recommend that you don’t wrap in beeswax is pineapple. The acid of the fruit will breakdown the beeswax. Also, I wouldn’t recommend wrapping oily foods directly in beeswax. If you have oily food, I would place it in a container and cover it with beeswax. Lastly, raw meat should not be placed directly into beeswax because the raw meat will make it unsafe to use the beeswax again for other food products. It is much better to place it in a container and then cover that container with beeswax. I have a beeswax food wrap that has a cotton exterior made by the B Factory, it is a “sandwich wrap,” however, I’ve used it to wrap my granola in. It’s light, portable, and it looks like a cute present!

Beeswax food wraps are an excellent way to take care of your food, your health, your wallet, and ultimately the environment. Literally everyone wins! If you don’t Beelieve me? Try it for yourself!
